COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is a continuation of BA 120.
It covers advanced concepts of spreadsheet use, database management systems,
and presentation graphics. Students
perform macro and command language programming in applications packages. In addition, the course provides experience
in locating and retrieving graphical and text-based information from the
Internet to support management activities.
Prerequisite:
Computer Skills
GOALS:
This course is a required course for the
AS and BS degree program in Aviation Business Administration, the BS degree
program in Aviation Maintenance Management (AMT), the BS degree program in
Management of Technical Operations, and an elective course in degree programs
permitting open electives at the 200 level.
The course is designed to provide
students with hands-on experience in the use of
relatively complex spreadsheet and database applications in
various business areas, with emphasis on the aviation/aerospace industry. In addition to providing a framework for
using the structured concepts in analyzing, designing, and programming end-user
applications, students will learn
concepts that are useful in choosing the best alternatives from among competing
design methodologies. Use of the
Internet for business research and communication is emphasized.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon course completion, students will be
able to:
1. Use
advanced structured spreadsheet design techniques, and to prepare appropriate
documentation and descriptive information.
2. Automate
the entry, update, and deletion of spreadsheet data, and the preparation of
required reports, through the use of spreadsheet macros.
3. Design
and create a complex database, using appropriate techniques for naming files
and fields, typing data, and creating and modifying the file structure.
4. Add,
modify and delete database records; compose queries correctly; and exchange
data with spreadsheet models of aviation/aerospace business operations.
5. Use
a report generator to produce meaningful reports based on queries of the database.
6. Design
and produce graphic presentation material from data contained in spreadsheets
and database management systems to illustrate and explain business management issues
and operations.
7. Use
the Internet to communicate with others and to obtain graphic and textual
information for business presentations.
NOTE
ON LIBRARY USE: The Jack
R. Hunt Library, located on the Daytona Beach Campus is the primary library for
all Extended Campus students. The Dean of Academics strongly recommends that
every faculty member, where appropriate, make it a requirement for all students
in their class to access the Hunt Library or a comparable college-level local
library and perform research. The results of this research can be used for
class projects such as research papers, group discussion, or individual
presentations. The important thing is getting our students to access the
library. The Internet address for the Hunt Library is: http://amelia.db.erau.edu/
NOTE: Written and oral
communications, aviation applications of subject matter, and computer skills
are emphasized in each course offered throughout the Extended Campus.
